63. Madonna (Cont.)

Why? She is a remarkable entertainer and, particularly, an excellent dancer. Her touring shows are vibrant and alive with rhythm and energy. And she is a wonderful singer, giving her melodies attitude and personality. She is an arbiter of fashion tastes, what she wears affects the look of the season.

In addition, she is an extremely smart businesswoman, in control of her life and career every step of the way. She owns her own record label, Maverick, which has had a string of successful releases. Her acting career has also earned her critical acclaim, both on stage (she starred in David Mamet's Speed the Plow on Broadway in 1988) and in films.

And now she is a mother. Even in this role, she continues her life of controversy by having a son, Rocco Ritchie, and daughter, Lourdes, out of wedlock. Madonna's flamboyance and charisma go a long way toward shattering the stereotype of Italian women as submissive and subservient to men. This is a contemporary Italian American woman who combines the passion of Italians with the practicality and business sense of Americans to forge a new identity that is uniquely hers. Madonna wants it all and gets it all. The world bows at her feet.
