Bologna is also a place where
the intellect thrives. Within its city walls the first university
in the world was founded in the eleventh century. With such famous
alums as Dante and Petrarch, Bologna has a well-deserved reputation
for being a great place to be educated. Today the University of Bologna
continues to feed hungry minds and draws students from all over the
world. Meanwhile, the well-governed city is a model for the rest of
Italy, with its excellent city services and public transportation.
And if you can take the time to glance up from your meal, you will
see the old city center faithfully preserved in all its antiquated
glory. The Piazzas Maggiore and Nettuno are pedestrian zones, filled
with medieval and Renaissance monuments. Nearby streets, containing
buildings adorned with frescoes that haven't yet faded from view,
are also well maintained,. In fact, you might fancy yourself in another
era entirely-if everyone wasn't talking on a cellular phone!
But let's get back to the food.
Throughout Italy, they say si mangia bene in Bologna, (you eat well
in Bologna.) The city even has a sauce named after it - bolognese
sauce! It's a fitting tribute to the city and its appetite for the
best.
